Acozac

Acozac, Archaeological site in Ixtapaluca, Mexico.

Acozac is an archaeological site in Ixtapaluca featuring multiple structures such as a circular temple, a rectangular platform, and a palace with remaining red stucco walls. The buildings are scattered across a wooded setting and reveal the construction methods of early civilizations in this area.

The settlement was established around 900 CE and underwent several development phases under Aztec influence. Occupation continued until Spanish arrival in the early 1500s.

The circular temple at the northern end stands as a dedication to Ehecatl, the wind deity, reflecting religious practices of pre-Hispanic civilizations.

The site is located on the federal highway México-Puebla and is easily accessible by car. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and paths wind through wooded terrain.

The site offers views of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes on clear days. This vista connects the archaeological remains with the natural landscape that held sacred meaning for many pre-Hispanic cultures.
