Museo Casa de la Bola, Colonial mansion museum in Tacubaya, Mexico.
Museo Casa de la Bola is a mansion with 13 rooms arranged around a central courtyard framed by stone columns that showcase European decorative arts and furnishings. The rooms span multiple levels and include a conservatory on the second floor with views of the surrounding gardens.
The building was constructed over 400 years ago as an olive oil estate and operated as an agricultural property for centuries. In the 1940s, collector Antonio Haghenbeck transformed it into a Belle Epoque residence and opened it as a museum to display his acquisitions.
The rooms display porcelain, European tapestries, and Boulle-style furniture that reflect the tastes of Mexican high society over generations. Walking through, you see how residents collected and displayed these objects as symbols of their status and connection to European culture.
Visiting is best done through guided tours that take you through the rooms, gardens, and conservatory on the upper floor. Wear comfortable shoes since you will navigate stairs and multiple levels throughout the house.
The chandeliers throughout the house hang unusually low, requiring visitors to duck carefully while moving through the rooms. These imported lighting fixtures are original to the collection and demand mindful navigation.
