Papalote Museo del Niño, Children's museum in Chapultepec, Mexico City, Mexico.
Papalote Museo del Niño is an interactive children's museum in Chapultepec Park, Mexico City, focusing on science, technology, art and environmental education. The building contains more than 288 exhibits divided into five thematic zones, along with a 333-seat IMAX theater.
Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta designed the building in 1993 using geometric shapes and elements from traditional Mexican architecture. The institution opened its doors as one of the first interactive children's museums in Latin America.
The name comes from the Spanish word for kite and reflects the playful approach to learning found throughout the space. Children can try different professions in a replica city using real tools and equipment under supervision.
The building sits within Chapultepec Park and is accessible through several entrances, with the main entrance suitable for families with strollers. Operating hours change during school holidays, so checking ahead helps plan a relaxed visit.
The walls and ceilings display artwork created by children themselves, which is regularly refreshed. The Maya Garden contains a walkable pyramid where visitors can learn about archaeological excavation techniques.
