Jocotitlán

Jocotitlán is a stratovolcano that rises 3,910 m above sea level in the northern section of Toluca Valley. The mountain sits within the Mexican Volcanic Belt and has steep slopes with vegetation covering its lower and middle sections.

The volcano produced at least two confirmed eruptions over the past 10,000 years, leading geologists to classify it as potentially active. This volcanic history shapes its current geological profile.

The Mazahua people called it Nguemore while the Otomi named it Gumidi, both names reflecting its sacred role in their worldview. Local communities still share these traditions with visitors today.

A winding road of about 19 kilometers leads from the town base to antenna installations near the summit. The terrain becomes steeper as you climb, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring water.

A Catholic chapel sits at 3,670 m on the volcano slopes and ranks among Mexico's highest religious buildings. This place of worship was built at this remote location to serve pilgrims visiting the mountain.
