Metztitlan Canyon, Natural biosphere reserve in Hidalgo, Mexico
Metztitlan Canyon is a biosphere reserve that spans several municipalities and displays a mix of different landscapes. Cloud forests rise in some areas while semi-arid zones with cacti spread across others, creating distinct habitats throughout the region.
The area holds archaeological remains from pre-Hispanic settlements that existed before European arrival. These early civilizations left behind traces showing long human presence in this canyon system.
The name comes from Nahuatl words meaning moon and place, showing the indigenous roots of this region. Local communities have long used these canyons as pathways and gathering places, and their presence shapes how the land is experienced today.
The dry season offers the easiest conditions for walking the trails without muddy or difficult paths. Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential because the terrain is rocky and some sections slope steeply.
The reserve is home to five species of wild cats, including jaguars and pumas that roam the remote forest areas. These large predators are rarely spotted, but their presence shows how well the landscape remains intact.
