Metztitlan Canyon, Natural biosphere reserve in Hidalgo, Mexico
The canyon extends over 96,000 hectares across eight municipalities and contains diverse landscapes from cloud forests to semi-arid zones with numerous cacti species.
The area holds archaeological evidence of Pre-Hispanic settlements and contains remnants of ancient civilizations that inhabited the region before European arrival.
The name Metztitlan originates from Nahuatl language, combining 'metztli' meaning moon and 'tlan' meaning place, reflecting the indigenous heritage of the region.
Access to the reserve requires taking a bus from Mexico City to Pachuca, followed by a collective taxi to Metztitlan, with hiking boots necessary for exploration.
The reserve contains five species of wild cats among its 50 mammal species and serves as a migration point for 271 bird species from the United States and Canada.
