Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve, Coastal biosphere reserve in Yucatán, Mexico
Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve is a protected coastal area in Yucatán that connects mangrove swamps, shallow lagoons, and marine zones. The different areas create habitats for fish, birds, and other animals adapted to saltwater or brackish conditions.
The area was established as a wildlife refuge in 1979 and later received biosphere reserve status during the 1980s. This protection helped prevent damage to the fragile coastal ecosystems and the species living there.
Local fishing communities practice traditional methods while actively participating in conservation work through controlled fishing areas. They share their knowledge with visitors and show how people and nature coexist in this region.
Guided boat tours depart regularly from the town of Celestún, which is accessible by bus from Merida. It is best to arrive early and bring water-resistant clothing, as the boat rides pass through marshy and wet areas.
Underground freshwater springs emerge beneath the water of the reserve, creating unique transition zones between saltwater and fresh water. These cenotes form pockets with specialized ecosystems that support adapted fish and plant species.
