El Sabinal National Park, National park in Cerralvo, Nuevo León, Mexico.
El Sabinal National Park is a protected natural area in Cerralvo featuring a mix of wetlands, forests, and grasslands that support diverse native plant species. The park is anchored by ancient sabino trees, some exceeding 500 years in age, which form the ecological core of the space.
The government designated this natural area as a national park on August 25, 1938, recognizing its ecological value for the region. At approximately 8 hectares, it remains the smallest protected natural area in the entire country.
The park takes its name from the sabino trees, regarded as sacred ahuehuetes in Mexican tradition and rooted in the land since pre-Hispanic times. Visitors today can walk among these ancient giants and sense the deep connection local communities maintain with this place.
The park opens daily from 9 AM to 8 PM and provides visitors with facilities including swimming pools, barbecue areas, and palapas for shade. A small train tour moves through the grounds, offering a comfortable way to explore the landscape.
The park serves as a vital connection point within the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range, allowing it to support a larger network of protected habitats. This location makes it a hub for regional biodiversity despite its surprisingly small footprint.
