Calaveras Lake, Reservoir in Bexar County, Texas.
Calaveras Lake is a reservoir southeast of San Antonio covering around 3,600 acres with a maximum depth of roughly 45 feet. The water serves dual purposes for power generation and recreation, with multiple points for public access.
The dam was constructed starting in 1967 and completed in 1969 to provide cooling water for a nearby power plant. This project became central to the region's power supply system.
The lake draws fishing enthusiasts and families from surrounding communities who spend time together on the water. It reflects how people in the area connect with outdoor recreation and water-based activities.
Visitors need permits for fishing and boating and can access several boat ramps and parks with picnic facilities. The most comfortable times are outside the hottest summer months when water conditions are more pleasant.
The lake is fed in part with treated wastewater from San Antonio, making it one of the earliest facilities in the country to use recycled water this way. This system shows an early approach to water reuse in industrial cooling.
