Hangar 9, Brooks Air Force Base, Military aircraft hangar at Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, United States
Hangar 9 is a wooden aircraft storage building at Brooks Air Force Base characterized by a broad gambrel roof supported by massive timber trusses. Large sliding doors provided easy access for moving aircraft in and out of the structure.
Built in 1918 during World War I, this structure is the oldest Air Force storage building still standing in its original location. It has outlasted decades of modernization at the base while similar facilities were replaced or demolished.
The hangar transformation from a military facility to an events venue represents the adaptation of military heritage sites for community gatherings in Texas.
The space accommodates up to 580 people and now serves as an events venue for gatherings like weddings and corporate functions. Access to the base is restricted, so visitors should plan ahead and confirm entry requirements beforehand.
Of the 16 identical hangars built in 1918, this is the sole survivor and retains its original exposed wooden wall studs and roof trusses. These original structural details remain visible and document the building techniques from that era.
