Mission Concepcion, Catholic mission in San Antonio, United States
Mission Concepción is a stone church with a central dome and twin bell towers located in San Antonio. The exterior walls feature geometric patterns carved into limestone that define the building's visual character.
Spanish Franciscan friars founded this mission in 1716 in eastern Texas and relocated it to San Antonio in 1731 to escape French threats. The move proved essential to the settlement's long-term survival.
The mission served as a center for converting Native American Pajalat tribes to Catholicism while teaching them European agricultural and crafting methods.
Entry is free and the grounds are open during daylight hours for visitors to explore on foot. If you plan to visit multiple missions in the area, expect them to be relatively close to each other in the city.
The western facade is oriented so that sunlight enters through the windows on August 15th. This solar alignment emphasizes the feast of the Assumption of Mary celebrated annually by the community.
