Lawndale Art Center, Contemporary art gallery in Museum District, Houston, US.
Lawndale Art Center is an art gallery in Houston with multiple gallery spaces designed to show all kinds of artistic works including paintings, sculptures, photography, and installations. The rooms are arranged to accommodate different art forms and sizes.
The center was founded in 1979 by artist James Surls in a warehouse at the University of Houston. It later moved to an Art Deco building that serves as its home today.
The center displays work from hundreds of artists each year through rotating exhibitions, including events such as Dia de los Muertos and The Big Show. These shows reflect the artistic diversity of the local and regional art scene.
Entry to the exhibitions and events is free, and the center offers many different art presentations throughout the year. Plan time to explore the different rooms and view each exhibition at your own pace.
The center runs a nine-month residency program where selected artists receive dedicated studio space, monthly grants, and materials support. The artists create new works during their time there that appear in spring exhibitions.
