Federal Correctional Institution, Big Spring, Federal prison in Big Spring, Texas
Federal Correctional Institution Big Spring is a federal prison for men in Texas that opened in 1972 and operates as a low-security facility. The compound includes cell blocks housing two inmates each, a separate camp with dormitory-style housing, medical services, a law library, classrooms, and recreational areas such as a gym, sports fields, and outdoor track.
The facility was founded in 1972 and repurposed buildings that were formerly part of Webb Air Force Base into a correctional compound. A separate camp addition opened in 1992 to house additional inmates.
Visits are permitted on weekends and some federal holidays, typically from early morning until early afternoon in designated visiting rooms. Contact with inmates uses their registration number, and money for commissary accounts must be deposited through official channels rather than sent directly.
The facility was built on the grounds of the former Webb Air Force Base, converting functional military structures into a correctional compound. This repurposing allowed a large prison system to be established quickly while making use of existing infrastructure.
