The Woodlands, Planned community in Texas, United States
The Woodlands is a planned community in Montgomery County and Harris County, spreading across several neighborhoods with residential areas, commercial districts, and public parks. The community covers 151 parks and a trail network of around 220 miles (354 kilometers) that winds through woodland and green spaces.
The Howard Hughes Corporation began building this community in 1974, creating a new model for integrated town planning near Houston. The plan aimed to connect residential areas with natural landscapes and workplaces, which was uncommon for Texas at the time.
Three school districts serve residents here, while Hughes Landing acts as a meeting point for restaurants and evening performances. Homes sit between preserved forest areas, giving the community a different feel from other Texas towns.
Several major roads run through the community, connecting its different neighborhoods and making orientation straightforward. Shopping centers and medical facilities sit in various districts, so most services are within a short drive.
The community sits at an elevation of around 164 feet (50 meters) and includes about 112 acres (45 hectares) of designated open spaces in addition to 20 neighborhood parks. This layout means each district has a park within walking distance.
