Highland Park, Residential town in Dallas County, Texas.
Highland Park is a residential town in Dallas County, Texas, nestled between two busy expressways about four miles north of downtown Dallas. The town spans roughly 2.2 square miles and consists mainly of single-family homes with landscaped front yards.
Investors from Philadelphia purchased the land in 1889, but the financial crisis of 1893 halted all construction. John Armstrong later revived the project and laid out the first streets that attracted settlers.
The town name refers to its slightly raised terrain, which offered early settlers a natural vantage above the flatter surroundings. Residential streets run beneath mature trees, and many homes display architecture from the decades between the 1920s and 1950s.
The town hall opens on weekday mornings and early afternoons for matters such as building projects or utility accounts. Visitors reach the main areas via two parallel expressways running north from Dallas.
An old pecan tree receives an elaborate light installation each Christmas season, drawing many residents to the park. Lakeside Park also displays small bear figures standing among azalea beds that bloom in spring.
