Highland Park Village, Luxury shopping center in Highland Park, Texas, US.
Highland Park Village is a shopping center built in the Mission Revival style in the Dallas suburb of the same name, featuring two-story stucco buildings with red tile roofs. The layout consists of several pavilions arranged around open squares and shaded arcades.
Opening in 1931 to designs by Marion F. Fooshee and James B. Cheek, the center is recognized as the first planned shopping center in the United States. It has remained in the hands of the founding family since its debut, with few changes to the original design.
The complex has served for decades as a meeting place for well-off families in the region and still carries stores from designers such as Dior and Hermès. On weekends visitors come to shop and often stay to eat at one of the restaurants overlooking the courtyards.
The grounds sit at the intersection of Mockingbird Lane and Preston Road and offer a valet parking service for visitors. Stores open daily, with some extending hours during special events or holidays.
The property was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000 as one of the earliest examples of 20th-century American suburban planning. Despite this recognition, the center remained in continuous operation and most visitors barely notice the commemorative plaque at one of the entrances.
