Ownby Stadium, stadium in Dallas, TX, USA
Ownby Stadium is a sports field in Dallas, Texas, built in colonial revival style with classic architectural features from early American design. The facility could seat nearly 24,000 people and had four grandstands, with the western side serving as the largest section for home team supporters.
The stadium opened in 1926 and served as the home for Southern Methodist University's football team, the Mustangs. By the 1930s, the team moved to larger venues, though the facility later hosted a professional soccer team before being demolished in 1998.
The stadium was named after Jordan Ownby, a generous alumnus whose donation made its construction possible. For over 70 years, it served as a gathering place where students, alumni, and local fans came together to support their team and celebrate school tradition.
The grounds were easy to navigate and offered open sightlines to the field from multiple viewing angles. The natural grass surface was versatile and could accommodate different sports, making it suitable for both football and soccer matches.
In the late 1970s, the stadium briefly hosted the Dallas Tornado, a professional soccer team from the North American Soccer League that drew thousands of spectators. This period showed how the facility could adapt to different sports and audiences.
