Kings Highway Conservation District, Dallas
Kings Highway Conservation District, Dallas, Historic district in Oak Cliff, Dallas, United States
The district spans approximately 30 acres between Stewart Drive and Mary Cliff Road in Oak Cliff and contains numerous residential homes of various styles. The houses date mainly from the early 1900s and display typical features of American Craftsman design.
The area was originally cotton farmland in the 1800s before suburban development began after 1910 with the Winnetka Heights subdivision. The neighborhood then grew quickly into an established residential community.
The residential architecture shows various building styles from the early 1900s, including Craftsman bungalows and Tudor houses with distinctive features. These homes shape the neighborhood's appearance and reflect the tastes of the families who built them.
Visitors should know that the area follows preservation guidelines that regulate the appearance of houses and properties. It is helpful to explore the streets on foot to observe architectural details and get a sense of the overall neighborhood.
The area was the site of a successful grassroots movement in the early 1980s to obtain preservation status for the neighborhood. This made it the second conservation district in Texas and the first of its kind in Dallas.
