Shell Keys National Wildlife Refuge

Shell Keys National Wildlife Refuge is a small offshore island made of shell fragments located in the Gulf of Mexico, west of the Atchafalaya River Delta. The site sits in remote waters and remains difficult for visitors to access.

The island was established in 1907 as one of the earliest protected areas within the National Wildlife Refuge System. It has remained under federal protection for over a century.
