Vidor, Industrial city in Orange County, Texas
Vidor is a city in Orange County in eastern Texas, stretching along the Neches River roughly six miles east of Beaumont. The town sits at the crossroads of Interstate 10 and Farm to Market Road 105, making it accessible for regional traffic as well as travelers passing through the area.
The Miller-Vidor Lumber Company set up operations in 1898 and created a timber industry that provided work and income in the area until 1924. In 1976 the Georgetown Texas Steel Corporation built a steel mill and brought heavy industry and new forms of employment to the town.
Steel industry shapes the townscape since decades and defines daily life for many residents, whose working days follow shift patterns and production rhythms from local factories. On weekends the shops and diners along the main road fill with families gathering after long working weeks to spend their few hours of rest together.
The main highways run through town in an east-west direction and connect the place with Beaumont to the west and Louisiana to the east. Travelers driving through find gas stations and simple diners along the Interstate, mostly used by people passing through the area.
Several small businesses use direct access to the Neches River for freight traffic and industrial operations, giving the town a connection to the waterways of the South. The river remains important for commercial purposes even though most visitors barely notice it and only see factory buildings from the shore.
