Camden Expedition Sites National Historic Landmark, Civil War battle sites in Clark County, United States.
The Camden Expedition Sites National Historic Landmark consists of nine locations across southwest Arkansas containing battlefields, defensive structures, and period buildings from the 1864 campaign. These scattered sites document different phases of military movements through the region.
The campaign began in 1864 when Major General Frederick Steele sent Union forces from Little Rock intending to advance toward Shreveport. Confederate resistance and supply problems halted this operation, leaving the outcome far different from initial objectives.
The sites preserve structures and routes that show how soldiers and local people moved through this landscape during the conflict. Interpretive displays explain how the land was used and how this military campaign affected those who lived here.
The various locations spread across a large area, so planning a route before visiting and deciding which sites to explore makes for a more rewarding trip. Multiple sites offer parking, walking paths, and rest areas that support independent exploration.
This landmark was the first to recognize an entire military campaign as a unified National Historic Landmark, receiving this distinction in 1994. This integrated approach allows visitors to understand the different locations as connected parts of a single campaign.
