Winterville Site, Archaeological mound complex in Washington County, United States.
Winterville Site is an earthen mound complex with twelve platform mounds and two plazas spanning a large area in Washington County. The central mound rises about 55 feet (17 meters) above the ground level, with other mounds arranged around ceremonial spaces.
People of the Plaquemine culture built these earthworks between 1200 and 1250 CE as a regional ceremonial center. The site grew and changed over time as it served as a focal point for a dispersed population.
The site was the heart of a community with complex social structures, as shown by artifacts and the arrangement of ceremonial spaces. People gathered here for rituals and to maintain connections with other settlements across the region.
The grounds are open for exploration, and you can walk around the mounds and plazas at your own pace. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the site covers a significant area and walking time depends on how many mounds you wish to visit.
People here exchanged pottery with distant settlements, showing that trade routes connected communities across hundreds of kilometers. This network reveals how interconnected prehistoric societies were despite their separation in space.
