Greenville Cypress Preserve is a nature reserve covering about 16 acres in Greenville, Mississippi, protecting stands of old cypress trees in wetland areas. The site features a walking trail passing through open meadows, flooded hardwood forests, and cypress groves, with an observation deck and informational signs to guide visitors.
The Greenville Garden Club acquired the preserve in 1940 and began caring for it. Since then, walking paths, a pavilion, and informational signs have been added to make the site more accessible and educational for visitors.
The name refers to the cypress trees that dominate the landscape here, growing in clusters in wetland conditions. Local residents value this place as a spot to connect with nature and notice the changing seasons reflected in the trees and surroundings.
The preserve is open from dawn to dusk and located at Highway 82 West and Cypress Lane, easily accessible to visitors. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground is often soft and muddy, especially during wetter months.
The cypress trees have distinctive knees, small pencil-like root projections that stick out of the water, a rare adaptation to living in wet conditions. These unusual features are clearly visible when walking through the flooded areas of the preserve.
