Greenville, River port city in Washington County, Mississippi
Greenville is a river port city on the eastern bank of Lake Ferguson in the Mississippi Delta region within Washington County. The settlement spans a relatively flat landscape with wide streets and several parks along the waterfront.
The third version of the settlement emerged after Union troops destroyed the previous community during the Civil War in the 1860s. Reconstruction took place at a slightly higher location along the Mississippi riverbank.
Nelson Street developed into a music district during the 1940s and 1950s with clubs that presented performances similar to those on Memphis's Beale Street. This tradition shaped the local music scene and drew artists from across the Delta region.
The Mid Delta Regional Airport connects the settlement with larger hubs in Texas and Tennessee through scheduled flights. Visitors can explore the downtown area on foot, though a car is helpful for reaching sites beyond the center.
The nearby Winterville Mounds Historic Site preserves ancient indigenous earthwork structures that received National Historic Landmark designation. These mounds belonged to a settlement that existed here before European colonization.
