Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge

The Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge protects coastal marshlands and forested areas along the Gulf, featuring salt marshes, tidal wetlands, and pine forest habitats that form a large ecosystem. The landscape supports a variety of animal and plant species throughout its different zones.

The refuge was established in 1992 with the goal of protecting one of the Gulf Coast's remaining large pine woodland habitats. Its creation followed national efforts to safeguard threatened wetland areas.

The refuge functions as an educational center where visitors learn about local ecosystems through ranger programs and nature interpretation activities.

The site is walkable with some trails that are easy to access, and the terrain is flat throughout. Visitors should bring insect repellent and prepare for wet conditions in many areas.

The area contains nine species of carnivorous plants such as pitcher plants and sundews that trap insects to obtain nutrients. These unusual plants thrive in the nutrient-poor soils of the wetlands.
