Pensacola Naval Air Station Historic District

The historic district spans 82 acres and contains 55 buildings, including residential barracks, an 1865 chapel, and several maintenance structures along Pensacola Bay.

Established in the 1820s after Florida joined the United States, the naval station became the first permanent naval air training center in 1913.

The district preserves military architecture from multiple periods, featuring an octagonal armory, chapel from 1854, and metal seaplane hangars built between 1916 and 1918.

The naval station trained over 20,000 pilots by mid-1943, increasing its capacity to accommodate 2,300 students monthly during World War II.

Naval aviators trained at this facility sank 63 German submarines, 161 Japanese warships, and destroyed more than 15,000 Japanese aircraft during World War II.
