Pensacola Naval Air Station Historic District

Pensacola Naval Air Station Historic District is a military complex in Warrington containing 55 buildings spread across 82 acres. The site includes residential barracks, a chapel, maintenance structures, and large hangars designed to house seaplanes from different eras.

The air station was founded in 1913 as the first permanent naval aviation training center after Florida became part of the United States in the 1820s. It grew to become the nation's primary facility for training naval pilots.

The district showcases military architecture from multiple periods, reflecting how aircraft design and naval construction evolved over time. Visitors can see buildings that show how military infrastructure changed across more than a century.

The site is open for walking tours, with clear pathways connecting the various buildings and structures throughout the grounds. Visit during mild weather for the most comfortable experience, since the location along the bay can become hot and humid on some days.

During World War II, pilots trained here conducted combat operations that destroyed enemy submarines and shot down thousands of Japanese aircraft. These aviators played a key role in some of the Pacific War's most significant air campaigns.
