New Hope Baptist Church
New Hope Baptist Church, Greek Revival Protestant church in Beatrice, Alabama.
New Hope Baptist Church is a Greek Revival style building in Beatrice, Alabama, built with heart pine wood throughout its structure. The foundation consists of hand-hewn timber resting on substantial log blocks that anchor the entire frame.
A Baptist congregation purchased two acres of land in 1855 for twenty dollars and constructed the building shortly afterward. The community has maintained an ongoing presence at this location since that time.
This place serves as a center for Protestant faith and community life in rural Alabama, where visitors can observe how local congregations gather for services and social events. The building itself reflects the values of those who built and maintained it over generations.
The church sits west of Beatrice along County Road 50, about 3 miles from town. A private road leads directly to the building, and the grounds offer space for parking near the entrance.
The cemetery beside the church holds a wooden cross marking the grave of a French traveler who died in an unusual encounter with his own trained bear. This marker stands out among the other burials as a reminder of an extraordinary event from the past.
