Snow Hill Normal and Industrial Institute
Snow Hill Normal and Industrial Institute, Educational historic district in Snow Hill, Alabama, US
Snow Hill Normal and Industrial Institute is an educational campus featuring eight surviving buildings from an original twenty-seven structures. The remaining buildings display Queen Anne and Craftsman architectural styles spread across the Wilcox County grounds.
Founded in 1893 by William James Edwards as a single log structure, the institute grew to serve over 400 students in its early years. The school operated until 1973, leaving behind these buildings as evidence of its growth.
The institute served as a vital educational space for African American students during an era when such opportunities were scarce. Walking through the grounds, you can sense how learning was central to the community's aspirations.
The site is located in Wilcox County and can be explored on foot to see all the buildings. The historic structures are viewable from the outside, allowing visitors to understand the layout and architectural styles across the campus.
The grounds preserve the founder William James Edwards' residence along with five teacher cottages and a library building. These spaces reveal how daily life unfolded for those who led and shaped the school.
