Adams Grove Presbyterian Church, Greek Revival church in Sardis, US
Adams Grove Presbyterian Church is a white wooden structure in Sardis designed in Greek Revival style with a portico supported by box columns and four separate entrances. The interior retains original elements including a paneled pulpit and gallery that date to the building's original construction.
The church was built starting in 1853 following a land transfer from Henry Adams of the former Shiloh Baptist Church property. The structure survived the Civil War without modification and remains one of the oldest religious buildings in the region from that pre-war period.
The church layout reflects 1850s Southern society through its separate entrances that physically divided different groups of people. This architectural arrangement shows how building design embodied the social divisions of that era.
The building sits on a property adjoining a cemetery and can be viewed from outside, though it is privately owned and maintained. Visiting during daylight hours allows you to see the white wooden facade and architectural details most clearly.
It stands as one of only seven pre-Civil War rural churches remaining in Dallas County that has kept its original architectural elements unaltered since completion. This preservation makes it a rare window into 1850s church design without the modifications typically added over decades.
