Okaloosa Island, Barrier island in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
Okaloosa Island is a narrow stretch of land with three miles of white sand beach between the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay. Bridges connect this barrier island to the mainland, making it easily accessible from Fort Walton Beach and Destin.
The island became a tourist destination in the mid-20th century when resorts were first built along its Gulf shoreline. This early development established it as a major vacation spot in the region.
The Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park has drawn visitors since 1955 with dolphin shows and hands-on encounters with sea creatures. This marine facility remains a central part of how people experience the island today.
You can reach the island via Highway 98 from Fort Walton Beach or Santa Rosa Boulevard from Destin. Parking is available in several locations, and most areas are easily walkable once you arrive.
The island protects three beach areas where sea turtles come ashore between May and October each year to nest and lay eggs. These nesting grounds are critical for the survival of these threatened creatures.
