Demopolis Town Square, Historical park in Demopolis, Alabama.
Demopolis Town Square is a historic plaza occupying one city block in downtown Demopolis, bordered by Main Street, Capitol Street, Walnut Street, and Washington Street. It features a Victorian gazebo, a cast iron fountain, and a former Presbyterian Church building that form the core of the space.
The square was established in 1819 by French expatriates who settled in the area following Napoleon's downfall and created a public gathering space for their new community. This origin makes it one of Alabama's oldest assembly places.
The square serves as a gathering place for the community during Christmas celebrations and seasonal events throughout the year. Locals use this central location to connect and share traditions.
The square is small enough to walk through easily and is bordered by four streets that provide clear orientation. The surrounding buildings, including the old City Hall, serve as helpful landmarks for navigation.
The building formerly known as the Presbyterian Church, now called Rooster Hall, served as Marengo County Courthouse from 1868 to 1871. This shift in purpose reflects how the site's importance changed over time.
