Glover Mausoleum, Greek Revival mausoleum in Riverside Cemetery, Demopolis, Alabama.
Glover Mausoleum is a square brick structure in Riverside Cemetery in Demopolis, Alabama, built in Greek Revival style. The building contains thirty burial vaults stacked on the east and west sides, with cast iron columns supporting a porch and stucco walls scored to resemble dressed stone.
Mary Anne Glover commissioned the structure between 1841 and 1845 to house the remains of her husband Allen Glover and family members. It was built on elevated terrain overlooking a cemetery that served as the primary burial ground for prominent families in the region.
The mausoleum design incorporates cast iron columns supporting a surrounding porch, with smooth stucco walls scored to reproduce ashlar stonework patterns.
The mausoleum is located within Riverside Cemetery and can be accessed through the Griffin Street entrance, where it stands as a prominent central structure. Visit during daylight hours to fully appreciate the architectural details of the exterior and roofline.
A granite sphere and cross crown the low-pitched roof, unusual elements that give the structure the appearance of a religious monument. An original Gothic style iron fence once enclosed the property but has largely vanished over time.
