Montgomery Zoo, Wildlife park in Montgomery, Alabama, United States.
Montgomery Zoo is a wildlife facility spread across 40 acres with animals organized into sections that represent their natural habitats from Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. The collection includes hundreds of species from around the world, displayed in settings designed to reflect where these animals live in nature.
The zoo began in 1920 as a small animal collection in Oak Park before closing for over a decade starting in 1960. It relocated and reopened at its present location in 1972, where it has grown into the facility visitors see today.
The zoo plays an educational role in the community, hosting school groups and families who come to learn about wildlife from around the world. The space serves as a place where people develop connections with animals and understand their conservation needs.
The grounds are navigable on foot, though comfortable walking shoes are recommended as there is considerable distance to cover between exhibits. Bring water and sun protection, especially during warmer months when heat can be intense.
The African Realm section concentrates a large collection of African megafauna in one area that visitors experience as a cohesive landscape. This particular section also features an Old World Aviary where numerous bird species from Africa and Asia share a prominent space.
