Reverie, Greek Revival mansion in Marion, Alabama
Reverie is an antebellum mansion in Marion featuring four white Doric columns of brick covered with stucco, accompanied by a massive frieze board and dentil moldings encircling the structure. The building rises across multiple levels with numerous rooms and retains original architectural details on its facade and roofline.
The house was built in 1858 and served as Union troop headquarters during the Civil War occupation of Marion. Markings from that occupation period remain visible in the attic today.
The interior showcases elaborate plaster work, ceiling medallions, and heart pine floors from the original period, complemented by later additions of oak and mahogany surfaces in rooms with high ceilings. These crafted details shape how the house feels when you walk through it.
The house is located at 110 West Lafayette Street in Marion and can be visited by prior arrangement. It is best to contact ahead to schedule a tour of the property.
The property features what may be Alabama's oldest wisteria arbor, with roots predating the mansion itself. This vine structure creates a layer of history older than the building.
