Legion Field, Sports stadium in Birmingham, United States
Legion Field is a stadium in Birmingham, Alabama, built from concrete terraces that can hold more than seventy thousand spectators. The facility spreads across a large open site with wide staircases and walkways between the different stands.
Construction was completed in 1927 following plans by architect David Whilldin, and the venue opened on November 19 of that year. Over the following decades the stadium underwent several renovations and served as a site for major sporting events in the southeastern United States.
The venue takes its name in honor of American war veterans and long served as home ground for several football teams. Today it mainly hosts high school football games where the local community gathers.
The stadium sits near downtown and can be reached through several entry points distributed on different sides of the facility. Large parking areas surround the site, and seating areas for people with limited mobility are available.
During the 1996 Olympics soccer matches were held here even though the main events took place in Atlanta. Later the professional team Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football played several seasons on this field.
