Hoover, Suburban city in Jefferson and Shelby counties, Alabama, United States
Hoover is a city in Jefferson and Shelby counties in north central Alabama. It covers roughly 50 square miles (130 square kilometers) with residential neighborhoods, shopping areas and office parks along Interstate 459.
The municipality incorporated in 1967 and took its name from insurance company owner William H. Hoover. It grew considerably after 1980 when Riverchase was annexed and new residential areas were added.
The Riverchase Galleria complex serves as a gathering point for residents who combine shopping, dining and social events under one roof. The metropolitan stadium draws college baseball teams and their fans from across the Southeast each spring.
Interstate 459 forms a half circle around the state capital Birmingham and provides access to different parts of the city. Most shops, restaurants and services cluster near highway exits and major intersections.
The public school system operates ten elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools for the community. The Galleria opened in 1986 and connects retail, offices and a hotel under one large covered complex.
