López Serrano Building, Art Deco residential building in Vedado, Cuba
The López Serrano Building is an Art Deco residential structure in Vedado with fourteen floors and a central tower supported by ten steel columns above the main ten-story base. The apartments feature modern conveniences such as separate service entrances, hot and cold water systems, and geometric tile floor patterns.
The building was completed in 1932 and remained Cuba's tallest residential structure until FOCSA was constructed in 1956. Its completion marked a milestone in Cuban architecture and demonstrated the growth of modern urban development in Havana.
The lobby features a nickel-silver relief sculpture called El Tiempo, created by artist Enrique García Cabrera. This artwork shows how residents of the time valued modern artistic expression in their everyday surroundings.
Visitors can best appreciate the building from the street, as the interior is typically not open to the public. The surrounding sidewalks in Vedado offer good vantage points to observe its architectural details and tower structure.
The penthouse was home to Cuban political figure Eduardo Chibás until his death in 1951. This connection to an important moment in Cuban history gives the building significance beyond its architectural value.
