Stanley, Capital town in East Falkland, Falkland Islands
Stanley is the capital town on East Falkland, positioned on a north-facing slope above the harbor. Buildings mostly have one or two stories, timber facades, and corrugated metal roofs in colors such as red, green, and blue.
The settlement was founded in 1843 as a deep-water port and replaced Port Louis as capital in 1845 due to better anchorage conditions. The harbor served as a repair station for ships on the Cape Horn route during the 19th century.
Residents speak English and keep British customs in their homes with colorful corrugated roofs and small gardens. Red telephone boxes and postboxes stand on street corners, giving the streetscape a familiar British character.
Visitors can walk through the main streets on foot, as most points of interest sit close together. Weather conditions change quickly and warm, windproof clothing is advisable throughout the year.
Christ Church Cathedral has stained glass windows featuring penguin motifs that show themes from local wildlife. A whalebone arch stands in front of the building, erected in 1933 for the centenary of British rule.
