The building stands on land granted in 1746 by the Colonial Council of Montevideo to Felipe Pascual, maternal grandfather of José Artigas.

The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 to 21:00, offering free guided tours and access to exhibition spaces and library facilities.
The garden preserves an original ombu tree and palm tree that existed during José Artigas's childhood at this location.
