Museo Histórico Casa de Artigas, Historical museum in Sauce, Uruguay

The Museo Histórico Casa de Artigas occupies the original two-room stone-and-mud house of the Artigas family in Sauce, with a perimeter wall of the same material. The complex includes a library on Artigas, a children's playroom, two multi-purpose halls, permanent and temporary displays on Uruguayan history, and an ombú and a palm tree from the family's time.

In 1746 the colonial council of Montevideo granted Felipe Pascual Asnar, José Gervasio Artigas's maternal grandfather, a 2,583-hectare estancia on the middle stretch of the Arroyo del Sauce Solo. After Asnar died in 1773, his daughter Francisca and her husband Martín José de Artigas ran it, and Artigas spent his childhood and youth here. In 1836 the property was sold to Vicente Ponce de León, who donated it to the Catholic Church; the state took over the building in 1925 and reopened it on 19 June 1927. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1975, and the museum opened on 3 November 1984.

The museum keeps a permanent display of furniture and objects from the Artigas family home and a painting series titled Artigas ciudadano. A library specialised in Artigas studies serves as a research centre, and the cultural centre hosts talks, conferences and book presentations for Sauce and the wider region.

The museum occupies the former Artigas family estate in Sauce, Canelones Department, and shares its grounds with the Centro Cultural Casa de Artigas, inaugurated on 11 June 2014. Inside are two multipurpose halls, a children's play library and an artiguista library with digital information service. The ombú and palm tree from the Artigas era stand on the property.

On the museum grounds stand an ombú and a palm tree that date from the years when the estancia belonged to the Artigas family. The 2013 archaeological digs led by Carmen Curbelo of the Universidad de la República also uncovered material from both Indigenous populations and European settlers, now displayed in the museum.
