Osasco, Industrial municipality in São Paulo metropolitan region, Brazil
Osasco is a big city in São Paulo state, stretching northwest along the Tietê River. The municipality borders the capital São Paulo directly and forms an important part of the metropolitan region.
The settlement emerged during colonial times as an outpost of São Paulo and remained a rural area for long periods. On February 19, 1962, the territory officially separated and became an independent municipality.
The name comes from the Italian municipality of Osasco, birthplace of founder Antonio Giuseppe Agù from Turin province. This connection still appears in street names and neighborhoods that recall the early Italian settlers.
Several commuter rail lines of the CPTM system connect the center with São Paulo and other neighboring cities. Highways run in all directions and allow quick access from different parts of the metropolitan region.
Industrial zones produce goods for the Brazilian rail network, including railroad cars and train components. These production facilities rank among the largest of their kind in all of South America and shape the local economy.
