Pico da Ibituruna is a mountain peak that rises approximately 1,100 meters and shapes the landscape of Governador Valadares. Its dark rock face is surrounded by forest and visible from many points throughout the city.
European exploration of this location began in 1573 when Sebastião Fernandes Tourinho arrived, marking initial Western contact with the area. After this arrival, the region gradually developed as settlements expanded into the territory.
The name Ibituruna comes from the Tupi language and refers to the dark rocks that give the mountain its distinctive appearance. This linguistic connection to indigenous heritage remains part of how locals relate to and identify with this landmark.
The summit is reachable by car in about 30 minutes from downtown Governador Valadares via a paved road. Coming early in the day helps you enjoy the clearest views and most comfortable conditions.
Since the 1970s, the location has become a hub for hang gliding and paragliding thanks to its favorable thermal conditions. Flight enthusiasts from around the world visit specifically to take advantage of these exceptional wind patterns and soar above the landscape.
