Melawi, Administrative region in West Kalimantan, Indonesia
Melawi is an administrative regency in West Kalimantan with Nanga Pinoh as its main government center. The territory spans a large landscape of forests and rivers, divided into several districts spread across the region.
Melawi was established as an independent regency in 2003, created by separating from the former Sintang administrative area. This split was part of Indonesia's broader decentralization reform that gave more regions local autonomy.
The eleven districts of Melawi, including Sokan, Tanah Pinoh, and Belimbing, represent different local communities with distinct administrative centers and village organizations.
Travel is easiest during the drier months when roads are more accessible and river crossings are safer. Visitors should arrange supplies and services before traveling into remote districts, as facilities outside the main town are limited.
Melawi Regency achieved a Gross Regional Domestic Product of 6,644.40 billion Rupiah while maintaining an economic growth rate of 4.56 percent.
