Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in South East Point, Victoria, Australia.
Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse is a white cylindrical tower standing on granite cliffs at South East Point in Victoria. The structure features a lantern room with views across Bass Strait and is surrounded by the original keeper's cottages.
Construction began in 1853 using convict labor and local granite, with completion in 1859 to guide ships through Bass Strait. The lighthouse was built in response to many shipwrecks along this dangerous coastline.
The keeper's cottages show how lighthouse families lived and worked in this isolated location. The buildings reflect the daily routines and challenges of maintaining a vital navigation post far from towns.
The lighthouse site is reached via a walking trail of about 18 kilometers from Tidal River and requires good physical fitness. Accommodation in the keeper's cottages can be arranged in advance and offers basic facilities for overnight stays.
The light operates on solar power and produces regular flashes across Bass Strait. This makes it one of the few lighthouses functioning without conventional electricity infrastructure.
