Canberra Stadium, Multi-purpose sports venue in Bruce, Australia
Canberra Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue in the suburb of Bruce within the Belconnen district, north of the city centre. The rectangular playing field is surrounded by several grandstand sections that together hold around 25,000 spectators, divided between a main stand and additional seating areas.
The facility opened on 3 December 1977 following construction that began in 1976 under the direction of architect Philip Cox. Ahead of the Sydney Olympics in 2000, modifications shifted its original Australian Rules Football layout towards exclusive use for rectangular field sports.
The venue takes its name from the northern Canberra suburb where it stands and serves as home ground for two major teams playing their season matches here. On game days, supporters from across the region gather to watch rugby fixtures and cheer for the local sides.
Several entrance gates provide access to the ground, making it easier for visitors who can use nearby public transport or parking facilities. On event days, arriving early helps avoid queues and allows time to find your section before kickoff.
When the ground was reconfigured for the Olympics, the stands were adjusted in a way that made Australian Rules Football no longer possible, leaving the venue solely for rugby and football. That structural decision continues to define how the facility is used today, preventing a return to its original sporting code.
