Cameron Offices, Belconnen, Brutalist office building in Belconnen, Australia
Cameron Offices is an office building in Belconnen comprising three connected wings built from precast and poured concrete. The structure displays the raw, monolithic forms typical of brutalist design from the 1970s era.
Construction began in 1970 and was completed in 1976 as a government office complex. Only three of the original nine wings remain standing today.
The complex features the Optical Galaxy Sculpture by Canadian artist Gerald Gladstone, integrating art within the concrete architecture.
The building now serves as student accommodation for the University of Canberra and can be viewed from outside. The main facade and pedestrian bridge are accessible for viewing, allowing you to explore the concrete architecture from different angles.
The structure employs hanging beams and post-tensioned concrete to create spacious interiors without support columns. This innovative engineering approach was remarkable for its time and reflects the technical ambition of brutalist design.
