Alfredson's Joinery, Heritage-listed joinery workshop in Cooran, Australia.
Alfredson's Joinery is a heritage workshop complex located at 28 King Street in Cooran, comprising several buildings with varied roof designs. The structures are arranged across a sloping site, with gabled, sawtooth, and skillion roofs covering different work areas.
The workshop was established in 1933 by Mervyn Alfredson as a joinery operation. A decade later, a sawmill was added to produce pre-cut house frames that were shipped to customers across Queensland and beyond.
The workshop served as a training ground where carpenters and joiners learned their craft under experienced masters. The skills passed on here shaped how wooden structures were built across the region for generations.
The site is built on sloping ground, so expect uneven levels and steps between different sections. Visitors can walk around the exterior to view the various rooflines and building arrangements without difficulty.
The workshop pioneered a system of pre-cut house frames using mortise and tenon joints that could be assembled on site. This innovative approach allowed homes to be distributed to remote areas, including islands in the Pacific.
