Lake Cootharaba

Lake Cootharaba, lake in Queensland, Australia

Lake Cootharaba is a large, shallow reservoir in Queensland that stretches about 10 kilometers long and averages 1.5 meters deep. The water takes on a brownish tint from tannin in surrounding plants, while the lake connects to the sea through the Noosa River system.

The area around the lake was used for thousands of years by local communities for fishing and gathering food from the water. In 1869, a sawmill started at Elandra Point, leading to a small settlement that is now recognized as a heritage site for its historical value.

The name Cootharaba comes from the Kubi Kubi people who have used this land for thousands of years. Today, you can sense their lasting presence when you walk along the shore and explore the natural landscape that holds deep meaning for the community.

The lake area offers several camping sites and beaches for swimming and boating, with some spots accessible only by boat or canoe. Visitors should note that natural waters are not patrolled, so be cautious when swimming and protect yourself from sun and weather exposure.

The lake is one of only two places in the world with this special wetland type and is sometimes called the 'River of Mirrors' because the dark, still water reflects the sky and trees like glass. This unusual quality makes it a favorite spot for wildlife watching and quiet boat trips.
