Plaza México – The Marketplace, Mexican-style marketplace in Los Angeles County, US
Plaza México – The Marketplace is a Mexican-themed shopping center in Los Angeles County, housed in a two-story building with stucco walls, terracotta tile roofs, and more than 120 retail shops spread across its floors. National brands and independent local vendors share the space, offering clothing, household goods, groceries, and specialty items side by side.
The center opened in 2002 on the site of a former Montgomery Ward department store in Lynwood, a location that had served the community for decades before closing. Converting the property into a Mexican-themed shopping destination changed how the surrounding neighborhood related to that block.
The marketplace was designed by David Hidalgo after the model of a traditional Mexican small town, with painted facades, terracotta roofs, and a replica of Mexico's Independence Monument placed in the central courtyard. This design reflects the Mexican heritage of many residents in the surrounding neighborhoods and gives the place a recognizable identity.
The marketplace has a large parking area on site and is easy to walk through, with clear paths connecting shops and dining spots on both floors. Going during the day gives you the best chance of finding the widest range of open stores and food options.
The ground floor holds a grocery store focused on Mexican products and ingredients that are hard to find elsewhere in the region, from fresh herbs to imported spices and regional specialties. For many visitors, this store is the main reason for the trip.
