Village Green, Historic residential district in Los Angeles, United States
Village Green is a residential complex in Los Angeles with around 627 units arranged around a central oval green space. Buildings connect through pedestrian pathways and garden courts, while vehicle traffic remains on the outer perimeter.
The project began in 1942 as Baldwin Hills Village, introducing a new approach to multi-family housing design. It received National Historic Landmark status in 2001 for pioneering this residential model.
The place reflects a design philosophy that treats homes and green space as equally important elements of daily life. Visitors notice how the layout creates a sense of community, even with so many residents sharing the grounds.
The complex sits along Obama Boulevard and is best explored on foot, with pathways and gardens threading through the property. Walking around lets you experience how the layout shapes the feeling of the place.
The individual homes are deliberately oriented so living rooms and bedrooms face the gardens rather than the street. This design creates a different quality of living compared to typical apartment arrangements.
