The Hospital Universitario de Maracaibo operates as a major medical center with extensive facilities for patient care and medical research in western Venezuela.
The hospital project began during the 1950s under President Marcos Perez Jimenez's administration and opened its doors in November 1960 with 605 beds.
The institution maintains strong connections with the University of Zulia, training medical professionals and conducting research while serving the local population.
The medical center provides essential services including internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, and includes the Castillo Plaza maternity ward.
In 1967, the hospital made medical history in Venezuela by performing the country's first kidney transplant operation.
