Ángel de Amparo, Illuminated monument in Amparo district, Maracaibo, Venezuela.
The Ángel de Amparo is an illuminated monument in Maracaibo's western sector, standing on a communications tower that rises above the surrounding neighborhoods. At night, thousands of energy-efficient lights create a glow that can be seen from various parts of the city.
The monument was inaugurated in 1972 following a design competition organized by the state electrical company, which selected a winning proposal from a local designer. A major structural upgrade occurred in 1991 when the angel was relocated to a reinforced tower system.
The angel figure carries biblical meaning and becomes part of the city's identity during the Christmas months, when residents and visitors look up to see it glowing above the horizon.
The monument is visible during the later months of the year when the Christmas season arrives and the lights are turned on throughout the evening. From various neighborhoods across the city, you can see the glow in the sky, especially as darkness falls.
The angel was one of the first structures of its kind designed specifically to illuminate an entire city during the Christmas season. Its placement on a communications tower created a dual-purpose building that served both practical and festive functions.
